JVSS History

Our Journey

The story of Janvikas Samajik Sanstha is deeply intertwined with the life and vision of its Founder & present Secretary, Mr. Ramesh Bhise.

Since his early years, Mr. Bhise witnessed the harsh realities of social injustice, child labor, and exploitation. These formative experiences shaped his resolve to dedicate his life to building an equitable society for the most marginalized—impoverished women, children, farmers, landless laborers, Dalits, and other oppressed communities.

In 1991, he chose the path of service over personal ambition, leaving college to join hands with veteran social leaders like Mr. Vishwanath Anna Todkar. During the devastating droughts in Marathwada, he travelled across rural Maharashtra, raising awareness about employment, water conservation, and rural distress through cultural campaigns. His grassroots work created employment opportunities and organized thousands of families around issues of livelihood and dignity.

Birth of Janvikas (1995)

With a vision for the holistic development of society—social, economic, and educational—Mr. Bhise founded Janvikas Samajik Sanstha in 1995. Since then, Janvikas has been dedicated to empowering marginalized communities through participatory, sustainable, and rights-based development initiatives.

Our Work Through the Years

Education for All

Janvikas has worked extensively among nomadic and marginalized tribes such as Paradhi, Laman, Vadar, Kaikadi, Bhill, and Masanjogi communities. The organization initiated Balwadis and successfully advocated for government Anganwadis in remote settlements. Through the Right to Education (RTE) framework, Janvikas has supported thousands of children—particularly those of migrant sugarcane laborers—to access residential schools and continue their education.

Women’s Empowerment

Believing that women are central to social change, Janvikas established guidance centers and self-help groups to promote education, justice, and livelihood opportunities for women. Thousands of women have been trained and linked to self-employment ventures such as dairy farming, goat and sheep rearing, vegetable cultivation, flour mills, and small enterprises. The organization has also facilitated access to financial services and bank linkages, ensuring women’s equal rights to property, land, and natural resources.

Sustainable Agriculture and Watershed Development

To strengthen livelihoods and environmental sustainability, Janvikas implemented large-scale watershed and water conservation projects. These initiatives rejuvenated ponds, improved groundwater levels, and promoted organic farming across hundreds of acres. Thousands of farmers have been trained in sustainable agricultural practices, ensuring resilience against droughts and climate stress.

Land Rights for Dalits and Landless Laborers

Janvikas has been instrumental in securing land ownership rights for Dalit and landless families across 222 villages in Beed District. Through persistent advocacy, land was legally registered in their names, enabling them to utilize land-based resources for sustainable livelihoods.

Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation

From the 1993 Killari earthquake to recurrent droughts and floods, Janvikas has been at the forefront of humanitarian response in Maharashtra. Relief operations have included rescue, food and clothing distribution, rebuilding houses, and restoring livelihoods. During the severe droughts of 2013–2016, Janvikas created employment for nearly one lakh rural laborers through MGNREGA, ensuring water and fodder availability across affected regions.

Housing and Sanitation

Janvikas has supported the construction of safe, dignified housing for the families of distressed farmers, integrating toilets, bathrooms, and solar lighting. Over 230 households have gained access to sanitation facilities through the organization’s interventions.

COVID-19 Relief (2020–2022)

During the pandemic, Janvikas established community kitchens in Patali village, serving free meals and providing temporary shelters to needy families. The organization distributed masks, sanitizers, and essential supplies while facilitating healthcare access and awareness campaigns. Special support was extended to bereaved families through financial and food assistance.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Over the last four decades—first through individual activism and later through Janvikas—Mr. Ramesh Bhise’s leadership has inspired a generation of development workers. Guided by his vision, Janvikas Samajik Sanstha continues to strengthen communities through education, empowerment, sustainable livelihoods, and rights-based development.

Today, Janvikas stands as a people’s organization—rooted in compassion, resilience, and justice—dedicated to creating inclusive growth and lasting change in rural Maharashtra.
